Natural preservation is a key part of life in Naples, whether it’s for native species on land or in the sea. Calling the white sand shores near Naples Grande their home, sea turtles are some of the most beautiful and noteworthy wildlife to be found near our coastal Florida retreat. They’re just as imperiled as they are magnificent, though – and we’re proud to be part of an ongoing effort to keep them safe as they migrate, reproduce and thrive. A special treat at Naples Grande is having the chance to see these little creatures up close and personal! With some preparation, you too can be part of the solution. Know before you go turtle watching at our Naples beachfront resort, and learn about how to observe sea turtles while helping to make their journey a safe one.
The formidable loggerheads are the most prominent species of turtle found in our waters, with the beginning of nesting season beginning in May and continuing through August. Throughout this time, there are a number of things we put into practice that are helpful for all our Florida beach resort guests to keep in mind.
- Too much night activity on the beach season may discourage females from approaching the beach.
- Completely avoid the use of flashlights, flash photography or fishing lamps on the beach at night, since lights confuse nesting females and hatchlings and may cause them to become disoriented.
- Never approach or touch nesting females or hatchlings! Female turtles are easily frightened, and may be deterred from nesting or returning to the water. If you see sea turtle activity, simply remain quiet and keep your distance.
- Pack in, pack out. If you bring anything to the water – whether it’s lounge chairs, food and drink, or coolers, be sure to return with whatever you brought. Litter can be fatal to turtles, as well as many other types of marine life.
With these crucial tips in mind, you can look forward to experiencing one of the most magical parts of Naples, Florida’s rich natural environment. Best of luck in catching a glimpse of Naples sea turtle season during your stay!
